Wendy Mass, the famous American children's author has quoted the following statement ' Life is short, have desserts first'. Well, that is indeed a catchy statement. The statement simply implies to have all the fun you have as life is short. But the implications of that statement are to be considered seriously.
The mantra of the mass has also been strikingly similar. Eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow we die.Man, as a social creation is curious to explore the world around him. He is willing to indulge in any activity for that brief moment of pleasure. The author's call to have desserts is in striking contrast with the short life time of a dessert. Desserts can be anything that man lusts after to get a high.
Drugs, Alcohol, Sex or anything under the sun that gives him pleasure for even a short time. His stimulations give him a higher dopamine level and arouse feelings of pleasure for a brief period but they fail to satisfy him fully. As each dessert he tries melts, he goes for newer ones with different flavors. But, Has there been any dessert so far that has satisfied him fully?. He tries and tries all his life and ultimately dies. That is something that man fails to realize. My life is like a dessert too. It can melt at any moment. " Vanity of Vanities" said the wisest and richest man who lived on earth , King Solomon. As a person who had at his disposition the very best to enjoy, Isn't his statement rather contradictory?. This was a statement that was born out of his life experiences. If he couldn't find satisfaction in all that he had and if he termed everything under the sun as vanity how much better can we assess our own situations..??
Desserts melt . They never last. Nothing in life is lasting. Man cannot justify and exercise his liberty over anything that he tramples upon with the argument of a short life. Remember even in the Garden of Eden, the habitation God had created man to live and enjoy had restrictions. There was a dessert that was forbidden, the fruit of the tree of life. It is true that God has created this earth for his creation to enjoy. But that freedom is bounded by norms, God himself has set. Man's conscience is one such inborn trait. No creation on earth has been blessed with such a trait. But sadly today, he has silenced even his own conscience by his acts of abuse and violence. Can man justify his pleasures? Have they satisfied him fully? Where is the dessert that can give eternal satisfaction?
You can enjoy the taste of every dessert in this world but their taste lasts only for a while. Have you the tasted the words of Him that is sweeter than the honeycomb?..It is the words of Jesus Christ. He is the living bread and the living water. Those who come to Him shall never thirst or hunger again for He satisfies like none other. He fills the God shaped vacuum in the heart of every individual, that longing for something to truly satisfy the soul.
The word of God says,
Isaiah 55:1
Jesus also said,
John 4:14
